Learning To Drive in Someone Else's Car
Learning to Drive is different for everyone, some people need more practice than others, and some end up practicing in different cars, with a driving instructor for some lessons and with family or friends for some practice. This is why we provide learner driver insurance for practicing to drive in somebody else's car for anywhere between 1 day and 5 months.
So whether you need cover for months to learn to drive in a parent’s car, or just need a bit of last minute practice in a borrowed car before your test, we‘ve got you covered. So you get just the level of cover you want, for exactly how long you need it, without any headaches for the car owner.
Peace of mind for everyone!
If I’m Borrowing a Car and have a claim will it affect the owner’s no claim’s bonus?
No. Our 'learner driver with a borrowed car' policies are a separate policy to cover the learner driver only. The claim would come under this policy only, not the owner's policy. So in this scenario, this will not affect the No Claims Bonus of the owner of the car in the result of a claim.

Can I supervise a Learner Driver?
In order to be able to supervise a learner driver with an InsureLearnerDriver policy you need to:
- be at least 25 years old
- have held your Full UK, EEA or EU driving licence for at least 3 years
- have been a UK resident for at least 2 years
- have no DR coded motoring convictions in the last 5 years (Drink or Drugs related driving offences)
Remember to make sure that the person supervising you learning to drive is allowed to supervise a learner driver because otherwise you can be fined up to £1,000 and get up to 6 penalty points on your provisional licence if you drive without the right supervision.
Also your supervisor needs to remember that they are there to supervise and help you whilst learning to drive, and it is illegal for them to be on their phone whilst supervising and they must be sat in the front passenger seat, as they are there to be responsible in guiding you in how to drive and be there to help in an emergency. It’s also important to remember that whilst learning to drive it is illegal to drive on the motorway when supervised by family or friends.
Can I learn to drive as a named driver?
You can be added as a learner named driver on most annual policies, however this can cost a lot more money, not be very flexible in terms of how long the learner will be on the policy for, and it will affect the No Claims Bonus for the policyholder. This is why a separate learner driver policy is often the best choice, as you can take out learner driver insurance for as long as you want, it takes minutes to set up, and it can save you money and hassle without affecting any No Claims Bonus. If you want to find out more about learner drivers as named drivers we have a page dedicated to the advantages and disadvantages of learning to drive as a named driver.
Can I learn to drive in my own car?
Yes, you can also learn to drive in your own car for anywhere between 28 days and 5 months online, or you can even get an annual policy over the phone. You can read on to find out all the details about Learning to Drive in Your Own Car.

Should I learn to drive with family or with an instructor?
Everyone is different when it comes to what the best environment is for them to learn to drive and both options have their advantages. Driving instructors have to be qualified professionals and are therefore much more likely to be able to teach and spot the things that you may be doing wrong when you’re learning to drive than a parent or friend may. However, driving instructors can be very expensive and frankly, once you are comfortable with the basics of driving, a parent or appropriate accompanying driver will be a much cheaper option to get those extra hours of practice in. Plus you hopefully don’t have to book them in weeks in advance!
Our recommendation has always been that balance is the best answer when it comes to how you should learn to drive – driving instructors are very important to teach and build confidence, but getting those hours of practice in that you’ll need before your driving test will always be easier and cheaper with a parent or friend than it would to exclusively use a driving instructor.
So if you do want to supplement your driving lessons with practicing in someone else’s car, you can get a quote with InsureLearnerDriver in seconds for learner driver insurance for anywhere between 1 day and 5 months.
